根據隸屬於中國教育部的漢辦，截至2019年底，全球162個國家（地區）共有541個孔子學院，1170個孔子課堂，是自2004年底韓國開設世界第一個孔子學院以來，首次呈現數量減少。
2013年2月，加拿大的麥克馬斯特大學（McMaster）是全球第一個被媒體報導宣布關閉孔子學院的大學，關閉的原因是孔子學院在中國招聘教師時存在人權歧視。到2024年12月，歐美至少11國的137所大學、2個政府、3個中小學教育局終止了與孔子學院/孔子課堂的合作，至少130個孔子學院（將）被關閉。
