Cutting Ties With Confucius Institutes

According to Hanban, the governmental body under the Education Ministry of China that oversees all Confucius Institutes, there are 548 Confucius Institutes and 1,193 Confucius Classrooms in 147 countries (regions) by the end of 2018.

In February 2013, Canada’s McMaster University was the first university reportedly to close a Confucius Institute. As of August 2019, there have been at least 37 universities, 2 governments and 1 school board around the world that have cut ties with CIs/CCs, which resulted in 36 closures of the institutes.
